Designing for digital printing on Corrugate

While we’re happy to assist you with the technical aspects of designing for digitally printed displays and packaging, we’re not able to proofread, check for grammar mistakes, or provide any subjective feedback on design or content.

Here are some design guidelines that will help your project be a success: Your designs must be in CMYK format. We can’t use RBG or spot colour files as the colours are going to look significantly different once they are converted to CMYK.

  • Choose a font that is 10 pt or larger to ensure high-quality output. Use bolder or thicker fonts, and only use thin fonts or script fonts sparingly as they may not reproduce as cleanly.
  • If you’re using light or knock-out (white) text on a dark background, use bold fonts. Ink can bleed, so your type will appear thinner or smaller if it’s too light or thin.
  • Lines and line art must be 1 point or heavier.
  • Black text or lines should be 100%K (not rich black or registration).
  • Large areas of solid grey are best as a percentage of black (not Cyan, Magenta or Yellow)
  • Large areas of solid black should be set to rich black (60/40/40/100)
  • We cannot print white ink on a non-white substrate. If you require this specific feature, please get in touch and we’ll help you find a solution.

Can I provide artwork on your dieline?

If you’re using our 3D Packaging designer, you can customize your package directly in the designer tool. You will see your package evolve in real time and see pricing.

If you are working on display items or speciality products that are not offered on the configurator, you're CentralPac representative will work with you to provide dielines.

File Formats

Raster Images

  • Usually labeled as a .jpg, .png, .psd, .tif, or sometimes a .pdf file.
  • We strongly encourage high resolution 300 ppi images.
  • Lower resolutions (below 300 ppi) have noticeably lower print quality and are not recommended. We always recommend replacing low-resolution images with alternatives.
  • High contrast raster images are recommended for best print results.
  • The dieline template cannot be visible in the image if providing a rasterized art file on a dieline template.
  • All images must be in CMYK format. No RGB images can be accepted.

Vector Graphics

  • Usually labeled as an .ai, .eps, or sometimes a .pdf file.
  • Outline all text to prevent unpredictable changes in text appearance.
  • Embed all images (unlinked images may not print).
  • Flatten all transparencies (including any less-than-100% opacity screens or overlays) or convert them to a 100% opacity CMYK color build.

In all file formats, ensure that:

  • There are no cut or crop lines included.
  • All transparencies have been flattened.
  • Text and Line Art follows our recommended guidelines.
  • All images included are embedded, rather than linked

Resolving concerns with your artwork

We check artwork to ensure it will print to your expectations. If we find something that we feel will cause your final product to be of lesser quality than you might expect, we will always advise you of the issue and suggest a fix.

If you choose to proceed with your artwork as is, you take full responsibility for the quality of the final product.

Issues we will flag include:

  • Low Resolution Artwork
  • Small Text / Thin Lines
  • Crossover art on shipper seams
  • Blurry/Pixelated Images
  • Non CMYK colours
  • Atypical Orientation
  • Artwork outside of the copy-safe zone and/or on seal areas

Our digital press and die cutting equipment is state of the art. You can see a video of our Barberan “Big B” digital press here: https://vimeo.com/612915374/e4bd773cb2, and our Esko digital die cutter here: https://vimeo.com/563709978/3a3bce7dd8 Digital printers offer quality that is comparable to litho, flexo or offset printing presses, but with the added benefit of quicker set up time and no set up charges!

Do you offer inside print on your mailers?

We sure do! Please browse the products in the configurator and you will see where and how to upload artwork to the inside. If you are having any troubles, reach out to CentralPac and we will help!

What thickness board do you use?

Depending on the box or display style you chose to purchase with us, we’ll use different boards and papers with different strengths.

The strength of a corrugated flute is designated with an Edge Crush Test (ECT) rating. The Edge Crush Test measures the maximum compression force that a material can withstand without failing. Some flutes below are available in varying ECT ratings. The higher the ECT rating, the more load or weight the display or package can withstand.

  • EB (3/16”): Ideal for structural strength on exterior of display.
  • C (3/16”): Used for interior support, filler pads or shipping containers in brown board.
  • B (1/8”): Most common for die cutting purposes. This is a good compromise flute for stacking and print. Of course, as with other flutes, it comes in various ECT (Edge Crush Test) strengths to compliment the design requirement.
  • E (1/16”): Ideal for smaller format displays. Interior supports can be included to provide for additional strength.

Other specialty double-wall combinations of board can be manufactured: EF, EC, EB, etc.

Choosing a Substrate: White, K-Brite or Kraft

Digital SBS White: Used only for Digital printing. Kruger Top White (K-Brite): Excellent for lower cost digital print or direct print. Colour depth is tougher to maintain - not as glossy as Digital White or Gloss White liners. A good sustainable alternative.

Kraft is brown paper and may not accept all ink colours well. Pastels and warm colours tend to blend into the background, while cooler, brighter colours will show up more clearly. There are lots of resources online where you can visualize printed CMYK colours on kraft substrate.

Got more questions? Just give us a call or drop us an email and we'll happily help you out.

Do you use recycled boards?

Combined board, such as Digital SBS and K-Brite, are considered to be made from 100% recycled materials. Brown Kraft: Used for conventional shippers, layer pads, fillers, protective and supportive packaging such as partitions. All are made from recycled materials.

Where are your boxes manufactured?

All our products are manufactured in Toronto, Canada.
